The Avalon FM20 and FM30 are part of the Avalon series of fetal and maternal monitors designed for trained healthcare professionals in antepartum and intrapartum care areas such as labor and delivery wards. These monitors are not intended for use in ICUs or operating rooms.
Model Overview
Both models share a common hardware platform but differ in clinical capabilities:
  • FM20: Primarily for external monitoring in antepartum care
  • FM30: Adds internal monitoring for intrapartum use
Core Features & Clinical Applications
  • Smart Pulse & Cross-Channel Verification: first monitors with automated coincidence detection. Smart Pulse technology separately measures fetal and maternal heart rates to prevent misidentification and enhance diagnostic confidence.
  • NST Trace Interpretation: Built-in Non-Stress Test application serves as a clinical decision-support tool, automatically sorting through traces to identify those requiring closer obstetrician analysis.
  • Trace Separation for Multiples: Monitors multiple gestation pregnancies with Trace Separation technology to verify coincidence between mother and all fetuses. Standard twin monitoring with optional triplet monitoring capability.
  • Connectivity: Can be connected to  OB TraceVue obstetrical information system via RS232 serial or optional LAN interface for comprehensive data management.
Key Transducers & Accessories
  • External Sensors: Ultrasound transducer (M2736A) and Toco transducer (M2734A/B) for external fetal heart rate and contraction monitoring
  • Internal Monitoring (FM30 only): DECG/IUP patient module (M2738A) and associated cables for direct fetal ECG and internal pressure monitoring
  • Maternal Accessories: Includes SpO2 sensors (M1191B/L, M1194A), NBP cuffs of various sizes, and tympanic temperature probe
  • Avalon CL Wireless System: Compatible with wireless sensors for cableless monitoring, providing more freedom for the mother during labor
Important Considerations for Use
  • Waveforms: FM20's standard display does not show ECG waveform. FM30's standard display does show ECG waveform.
  • External Display: Unlike higher-end FM40/FM50 models, FM20 and FM30 do not support external video-out interface.
  • Intended Use: Device performs self-test at startup. Users must familiarize themselves with all instructions, warnings, and cautions before monitoring patients.
